Understanding the tidal coefficient
The coefficient measures the range between high and low water. It runs from 20 to 120 and is worked out for every tide: the higher it is, the higher the sea rises and the further it draws back.
- 100 to 120 — spring tides: the foreshore is uncovered at its widest, the best windows for low-tide foraging.
- 70 to 95 — high spring range: strong tidal range, sustained currents.
- 45 to 70 — average tides.
- 20 to 45 — neap tides: the sea barely moves, the foreshore stays covered.
At Le Tréport the tidal range can approach ten metres on the biggest tides: the sea then withdraws well beyond the shingle and uncovers the rocky ledges at the foot of the cliff.

Mers-les-Bains shares the same beach and the same bay as Le Tréport: the times on this page apply there as they stand. For Criel-sur-Mer, Dieppe or the Baie de Somme the difference is a matter of minutes, but it grows with distance — for an outing in the Baie de Somme, where the estuary shifts the times appreciably, it is better to consult a local tide table.
